Household Economics and Health Systems Research Unit at Swiss TPH
The main objective of the Household Economics & Health Systems Research unit is to study the interactions between individuals and the larger health system environment, with a particular focus on human behavior, as well as individual incentives and constraints. Most of the traditional public health literature has had a strong societal or population-level focus, with relatively little attention given to the decision processes underpinning the behavior of individuals and their families.
Identifying the motives and constraints underlying individual decision making is not only critical for understanding specific health behaviors, but also for designing the most effective interventions to achieve improved health outcomes. Through an explicit multi-disciplinary focus on the interactions between individuals, households, policy makers and the larger health system, our objectives are to 1) identify and overcome barriers to the adoption of healthy behaviors; 2) to improve health systems performance; and 3) to quantify the economic consequences of improved health at the individual and population level.

Marina Antillon
Marina Antillon is a Senior Scientific Collaborator. She leads analyses in economic evaluations and disease modeling of strategies against human African trypanosomiasis (gambiense), Salmonella typhi, and tuberculosis. Thematically, she's interested in decision analysis under uncertainty. She holds a degree in environmental studies with a minor in statistics from the University of Chicago and a degree in epidemiology from Yale University.
Günther Fink
Günther Fink is Associate Professor of Epidemiology and Household Economics at the University of Basel as well as head of the Household Economics and Health Systems Research Unit at the Swiss TPH. His main interests lie in the interactions between health and economic well-being, with a particular focus on child health and development.
Stefan Mitterer
Stefan Mitterer is a health economist and PhD student in Nursing Science at the University of Basel as of March 2019, under the supervision of Prof. Michael Simon and Prof. Günther Fink.
Dominik Schwarzkopf
Dominik Schwarzkopf is a PhD student in Health and Development Economics at the University of Basel as of November 2021, under the supervision of Prof. Günther Fink and Prof. Stefan Felder.
Fabrizio Tediosi
Fabrizio Tediosi is Group leader for Health Policy and System research in the Household Economics and Health Systems Research Unit at the Swiss TPH as well as Titular Professor at the Faculty of Science of the University of Basel. His main interests lie in the fields of health economic evaluations, health financing and management, global health policy, health policy analysis and evaluation.
